Back in the saturDAY! WHITNEY HOUSTON

Saturday's are time for our back in the day retro fueled post! Dear readers, let's not go too far! With the extreme buzz building for Whitney Houston's release August 31st, below are some classic Whitney videos and some rarely seen ones! Check 'em out, I love the George Michael aided, "If I Told You That" - so gooood!

Whitney Houston's Album Moved Up to August 31st Release - FREE SINGLE

(New York, NY -July 28, 2009) Fueled by the continuous excitement from last week's much-buzzed about Whitney Houston album listening events in New York and Los Angeles, Arista Records has moved the release date of I Look To You up to August 31st.

As a gift to her fans, a free download of the album's title track, powered by Yahoo! Music, is available now at www.whitneyhouston.com until July 31st. "I Look To You," a sweeping ballad with Whitney's signature soaring vocals that fans have come to love, was written by R. Kelly.

Backstreet Boys - THIS IS US Due October 6th

Backstreet Boys announced today (July 28) that it will release its ninth album, "This is Us," Oct. 6 on Jive Records. The lead single, "Straight Through My Heart," has just been released to radio and can be heard on the group's MySpace page.

The 11-track set follows the Backstreet Boys' platinum-certified 2005 reunion album "Never Gone" and 2007's "Unbreakable," which sold 1.7 million copies worldwide but less than 150,000 in the U.S.

Wow, less than 150,000 copies, they are lucky they didn't get dropped! Isn't that funny, you sell millions of records for years, suddenly the band kind of fizzles and then you get dropped by your label. Lucky for them this didn't happen and their latest track is pretty fun! Check it out at...

Madonna CELEBRATION rumored track listing

Madonna’s new album, “Celebration”, is a compilation of all things Madonna. It boasts a track listing that has a lot of her hits.

The rumored track listing:

CD1
  1. “Vogue”
  2. “Express Yourself”
  3. “Into the Groove”
  4. “Papa Don’t Preach”
  5. “La Isla Bonita”
  6. “Everybody”
  7. “Lucky Star”
  8. “Holiday”
  9. “Like a Virgin”
  10. “Borderline”
  11. “Material Girl”
  12. “Crazy For You”
  13. “Open Your Heart”
  14. “Cherish”
  15. “Like a Prayer”
  16. “Justify My Love”
  17. “Deeper and Deeper”
  18. “Erotica”
  19. “Rain”
CD2
  1. “Celebration”
  2. “Music”
  3. “Get Together”
  4. “Frozen”
  5. “Hung Up”
  6. “Ray of Light”
  7. “Beautiful Stranger”
  8. “Don’t Tell Me”
  9. “Hollywood”
  10. “Human Nature”
  11. “Secret”
  12. “Take a Bow”
  13. “American Life”
  14. “Die Another Day”
  15. “Sorry”
  16. “4 Minutes”
  17. “Give It 2 Me”
  18. “Revolver”

There are some songs that were really great that are missing from this collection, however. Like, where’s “Live To Tell” and "Dress You Up”? If this is it, then they obviously need to add these songs. I hate when compilation hits albums are not in chronological order, drives me nuts!! Also best GH to date IMO, Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits. Great cover, great chrono track listing, great remixes, great placement of the four new songs that were on it....

Britney Spears - KILL THE LIGHTS video clip

Britney Spears and her new animated video for "Kill the Lights". No, this is not the new single, that would be the pony driven video for "Radar". No, this is not FAN MADE but a fan was behind the video idea. And No, this isn't full song. Luckily, it's only for the fans and will not be seen on TV.

NEW Avril Lavigne Album slated for a November Release

New Avril Lavigne is slated for late November release. tentative first single is the track, "Black Star" from her new fragrance line (wtf?). Its actually a nice sweet song.

The Canadian pop singer tells Billboard.com that she's taking a more serious, stripped-down approach to her fourth studio album, tentatively slated for a November release on RCA. "A lot of the songs are mainly the acoustic and my vocal," says Lavigne of the as-yet-untitled project. "It's a lot different from anything I've done before. It's not a pop rock record. This is more about emotion and feeling."

"I started this record off really slow, just writing songs at home on my piano. I didn't work with a ton of people this time."

Though the album's first single hasn't been confirmed, the 25-year-old says it could "possibly" be a song that emerged from the TV commercial for her new "Black Star" fragrance, which will also launch in the U.S. this fall.

"It's the first song that I recorded for this record," she says. "A lot of people like it. It's kind of like a lullaby." The ethereal, piano-driven chorus was originally written just for the ad, but Lavigne has since decided to turn it into a full recording.

Album Delays Make News - Mariah Carey, Diddy, Lil Wayne

Some of the most highly-anticipated albums of the summer have been delayed, including Mariah Carey's "Memoirs of An imperfect Angel," Sean "Diddy" Combs' "Last Train To Paris" and Lil Wayne's proprter rock and roll album "Rebirth."

Carey's "Memoirs," first slated for an August 25th release via Island Def Jam will now be available on September 15th according to the Universal Music Group business-to-business website. Carey's new single, "Obsessed," is at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Combs said via a video interview with MTV News release last week that his project's been delayed partially because it's "Jay-Z time and Drake time -- enjoy those guys. But the 'Train' is coming, baby," he warns. "Get your ticket, you don't want to be left out."

Lil Wayne's label publicist confirmed to Billboard.com that his release date has also been moved, although a new date hasn't been scheduled yet. "Rebirth" was last slated for a June 23rd street date.

In addition, Amerie's long-awaited return, "In Love & War," which was originally slated for an August 11th release, will now be available on September 8th. Lead single, "Why R U," reaches No. 62 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week.

Mary J Blige New Album STRONGER Due November 29th

Mary J. Blige will release her 9th studio album ‘Stronger’ on
November 24th. The first single, ‘The One’, which features kid of the moment Drake is currently being used in a brand new AT&T ad. Her follow-up track will be the Chris Brown assisted ‘Stronger’ which leaked online recently.

“The album represents who and what I am right now. I’m a stronger human being after all the growing pains. It’s about life, love, change, strength—mostly really knowing who you are and being confident in that”

LAME! Chris Brown as
sisted second single from the queen of hip hop soul?! Are you kidding me, he beat the woman that sung your first choice didn't take track, Umbrella... ugh... NEW ARTIST! USE SOMEBODY covers

Ok, so weekends can be particularly slow music news days. Thus, I am going to add the New Artist Sunday category to the page. One new indie emerging artist and one label emerging artist.

First up, I am currently into that Kings of Leon song, "Use Somebody". I remember hearing it months ago, but just now it really hit me as freaking awesome. There are lots of great covers on youtube. Check out this one from a girl named Ashley and she's in the band, "The Shures". I also included VV Brown's version below her's.

Kelly Clarkson Already Gone OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO & the drama!

Kelly Clarkson's fab new video for "Already Gone" from her platinum album, All I Ever Wanted. On the DVD of her deluxe version of that album she explains that the original title was on the same line of "Circus", "Funhouse", "Fantasy Ride" etc, and so she opted to cut that title and use the name of the songs she liked most on the album. Also, there was some controversy with this "Already Gone" single, check it out below.

"Kelly explains this all in very honest way on a interview. "Ryan and I met each other at the record label, before he was working with anyone else," Clarkson begins, gritting her teeth. "He's from Oklahoma, I'm from Texas; we got along really well and had some of the same influences. We wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I'd never heard of a song called "Halo". Her album came out when my album was already being printed. No-one's gonna be sittin' at home, thinking 'Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.' No, they're just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, 'I don't understand. Why would you do that?'"

Understandably frustrated Clarkson claims she "fought" to prevent her label from releasing "Already Gone" as her third single, out of respect for Beyonce. "In the end, they're releasing it without my consent," she sighs. "It sucks, but it's one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It's kind of a shitty situation, but.… You know, you learn.""

I added a remix to I Do Not Hook Up below too!

New Madonna "Celebration" info!

Madonna will unleash the greatest hits album "Celebration" on Sept. 29 in the U.S.

The Warner Bros. collection will include hits from the Queen of Pop's entire career and boast two new songs. One of those, the title track, was recently recorded in New York and co-produced by Madonna and Paul Oakenfold. It will serve as the set's first single and is scheduled to hit radio airwaves on Aug. 3. Remixes of the tune will be serviced to dance club DJs tomorrow (July 24).

It is rumored that the effort's other new song is titled "Revolver" and is a collaboration with Lil Wayne. A demo version of the song -- without Madonna's vocals -- has been floating around YouTube since May.

While the tracklist for "Celebration" has yet to be announced, one can imagine a bevy of Madonna's Billboard Hot 100 hits will be included. On the Hot 100 chart, she has racked up a record 37 top 10 singles -- more than any other act in the tally's nearly 51-year history. Of those hits, 12 of them went all the way to No. 1.

In a press release, her label confirmed that "Celebration" will contain songs "remastered and selected by Madonna and her fans" including "Everybody," "Express Yourself," "Vogue" and "4 Minutes."

The album will be available in both single-disc and double-disc configurations and a DVD of the icon's music videos will also be issued simultaneously. It was unclear at press time if the DVD would be offered as a stand-alone product or come bundled in a CD/DVD package.

Nas Ordered To Make $44K Monthly Payments To Kelis

A judge has ordered Nas to pay Kelis nearly $44,000 in monthly support for the near future, a day after the "Milkshake" singer gave birth to the divorcing couple's baby boy.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Louis Meisinger issued the order at a Thursday hearing. Neither Nas, whose full name is Nasir Jones, nor Kelis, whose full name is Kelis Rogers, attended Thursday's hearing.

Rogers gave birth to the boy, named Knight, at a New York hospital Wednesday. The 29-year-old filed for divorce from the rapper in April. The couple was married in July 2003.

Profile Books will publish The 50th Law, a business guide for the 21st century co-written by "modern Machiavelli" Robert Greene and 50 Cent, in the autumn.

It is billed as revealing "how the power game of success can be played to your advantage", following on from Greene's previous title The 48 Laws of Power. It includes chapters such as "Turn Shit into Sugar-Opportunism" and "Hood Economics".

Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks Headed To Top 10 Debuts On Billboard 200

Well i think most thought Jordin Sparks might have a lock on the top of the Billboard charts next week, but it looks like another plan is in store. The sixth season AI winner will have to settle for another low rung on the top 10...

Also, Billboard has an exclusive SOS Jordin Sparks second single remix, follow the link to listen!

S.O.S

{Courtesy of Billboard below}

Next week Hollywood Records' Demi Lovato looks to be on track to start near the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her second album "Here We Go Again." Industry prognosticators think the set may shift 100,000-120,000 in its first week. The singer/actress' debut effort, "Don't Forget," bowed at No. 2 less than a year ago with 89,000.

Lovato may face competition from Daughtry's "Leave This Town," which has a chance of holding in at No. 1 for a second week. If the album drops a conservative 60-65% in sales in its second week, it may shift 95,000-110,000. It bowed atop the Billboard 200 with 269,000.

Jordin Sparks' sophomore album "Battlefield" will also likely make a top 10 debut, giving the "American Idol" champ her second top 10 set. Her self-titled debut entered and peaked at No. 10 in 2007.

Michael Jackson Theatrical Release Deal Close

Courtesy of Billboard

"Sources have confirmed to Billboard that a deal between the Michael Jackson Estate, AEG Live and Sony for a theatrical release of the Michael Jackson rehearsal footage from the ill-fated This Is It concerts could close today, though there are still some "unsettled terms" that are being negotiated. In fact, the deal is in such flux that it could shift to another studio by the end of the day. According to the source, Sony Music may co-invest with one of the film studios on this release, including Sony Pictures.

The source also says that Michael Jackson's father Joe Jackson's efforts in conjunction with promoter Leonard Rowe have "muddied the waters" in the Michael Jackson Estate and AEG's attempt to close a TV network deal for the presentation of the original This Is It production, created by Jackson and Kenny Ortega.

The This Is It special has been conceived as a tribute to MJ featuring Janet, the Jackson 5, and other major performers. The source says Joe Jackson has been shopping his own Jackson Family special on MJ's birthday on Aug. 29, which neither Janet Jackson nor the Jackson brothers have agreed to. "

New Unreleased Michael Jackson Song

A newly emerged Michael Jackson song has hit the web, "A Place With No Name", is reminiscent of "A Horse With No Name", but the song is very fresh. I really like it and would love to hear the whole thing. My guess is that the record company leaked this quick clip to get feedback, because the clip is so fresh and clean, and ends completely abruptly. However, it is not clear when he recorded it, but I would guess recently, it sounds too clever.

This is the first I have heard of this, but apparently Britney Spears has a "Singles Collection" being released later this year. Here's the info per GimmeBritney.com

"Sony Music Australia have just officially let us know that the album will be called “The Singles Collection” and there will be 2 different versions available when it’s released in Australia on October 23rd 2009.

There will also be 2 versions of the Greatest Hits release. A standard edition and a multi CD box set.

The release will be complimented by new songs, as well as all her biggest hits over a career spanning 10 years. There is currently no tracklisting available, but as soon as it’s announced we’ll be sure to post the info."

MJ sold 1.1 Million Records last week

The King of Pop dominates the Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard charts yet again.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Michael Jackson's catalog of solo albums sold a mighty 1.1 million copies in the U.S. in the tracking week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (July 12).

That's a jump of 37% stacked next to the previous week, when his combined albums sold just shy of 800,000. In just the past two and a half weeks, American consumers have purchased more than 2.3 million Jackson albums.

When Nielsen SoundScan's charts are released in the morning on Wednesday, July 15, Jackson's "Number Ones" collection will be the top selling album in the United States for the third week in a row, with 349,000 copies sold (an increase of 3%).

His "Thriller" moved 264,000 (up 41%) while "Essential" powered through another 149,000 (up 18%). Some older Jackson titles also saw great gains, likely owed to the one-two punch of re-stocking by brick-and-mortar retailers and the publicity generated by the memorial service.

"Off the Wall" sold 107,000 (up 108%), "Bad" did 97,000 (up 332%) and "Dangerous" blew through 67,000 (up 157%).

{SOURCE}

If only his sales would count towards the Billboard 200, man, I would love to see that! (Due to Billboard R&R after a certain album is dormant for a period of time it can no longer be on the big chart, let em knwo if you wanta detailed info on this...)

Mariah Carey "Obsessed" Video

I'm a bit late on posting this, but alas here is Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" video. I really like it!

I'm loving "jokey Mariah" with the hair dryer and such. I love the male stalker Mariah. Most have been pinning that character as Eminem, but after watching the vid, I disagree. The ending is great, the direction is fantastic and MOST importantly, Mariah looks age appropriate in every scene! Not that she can't be herself, but what she is wearing is perfect and makes her look very sexxxy! Love her!

Look for Mariah's "Memories of an Imperfect Angel" August 24 (UK) and August 25 (US). I'm sure she'll put out another single a couple week's before the albums release, a ballad most likely.

What do you think about "Obsessed" and the vid?

Maxwell is Number One

Part One of Maxwell's trilogy of albums, BLACKsummersnight, has debuted at number one.

"Maxwell makes big news on the Billboard 200 albums chart, entering at No. 1 with "BLACKsummers'night" and a career-high sales week of 316,000. It's his second chart-topper. The singer's last set, 2001's "Now," also opened at No. 1 with a then-best 296,000 copies sold."

{SOURCE}

This album is fantastic and deserves that spot. Very real, gritty, and honest lyrics and the sound is impeccable. Standout track by far is "LoveYou", it's simply amazing. When he hits that second voice and changes up the vocal arrangement, ah, pure love! The deluxe version features one of the best corresponding DVD's I have ever seen of any artist. The entire DVD was watchable and enjoyable, but maybe that was just Maxwell's smokey voice. Check it out and grab a copy!

Russell Brand Returns to Hosting MTV VMA's!

Following the epically outrageous 2009 MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles, MTV is bringing the celeb-powered, anything-might-happen craziness back to New York for the 26th annual MTV Video Music Awards on September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. For the second year in a row, comedian Russell Brand will host the live show, taking place at some of the city's most iconic locations, including Radio City Music Hall.

"This year will be a controversy-free festival of love and discrete orgasms," said the "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star, who stirred plenty of controversy as host last year when he joked about the Jonas Brothers' purity rings.

What do you think about Russell Brand hosting again?

I adore Russell Brand! I think he is great and funny and witty and savvy and all things in between! He is very smart too! Last years VMA's were great in large part because of him even though some people "didn't get him". His jokes and pokes at people were spot on and I can't imagine anyone else following up last years and relating to today's world and pop culture.

Lily Allen - 22 Video

Finally, a good Lily Allen video! 22 is fun, quick and I love the whole mirror situation. The Fear was a fantastically fun video, then Fuck You and Not Fair 100% failed to deliver. What bores.

What do you think about 22?

Kelly Rowland - The Today Show

Kelly Rowland interviewed on the TODAY Show talking about The Fashion Show, Michelle Williams and Beyoncé Knowles of Destiny's Child and her latest single "When Love Takes Over" with David Guetta.

Christina Milian ft. The Dream - Chameleon 2009

Christina Milian's smokey sexy "Chameleon". Interesting song, very different, very vocal. I am digging this new Christina. I adored "Us Against the World" and it was a crime it didn't receive the attention it deserved. Her album "Elope" drops later this year via Myspace Records.

Britney Spears on ET Promoting FINAL ACT of Tour!

Great behind the scenes video of Britney's tour secrets!

Per VIP Media "Sources claim "Mannequin" will be the fifth single from Britney Spears. Same sources claim "Mannequin" was also supposed to be the 4th single and it was in the orginal setlist and was set to be the first single before "Womanizer" was chosen , but "Radar" had to get released so it got to go first. Now "Mannequin" is planned as the final single from the album, to be released later in fall while the tour is still going.

And the sources claim that "Unusual You" is set to be added in US leg of the tour, while the tour DVD will be shot in Australian gig.

There is just few days to July 16th, which will be our tour-stop for Britney. So check out the review of the "Circus" tour after July 17th."

Lady Gaga makes History! 3 Number One Singles off Debut!

Lady GaGa becomes just the third artist in the 16-year history of the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart to collect three No. 1 songs from a debut album. "LoveGame" (Interscope) rises 2-1, marking Lady GaGa's third No. 1, following "Just Dance" (two weeks) and "Poker Face" (five weeks).
The three songs appear on her top five Billboard 200 album, "The Fame." The set has sold 1,162,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The singer-songwriter born Stefani Germanotta joins just two prior artists in accomplishing the triumphant triple play.

In 1993-94, Ace Of Base reigned consecutively on Mainstream Top 40 with three cuts from its debut set "The Sign": "All That She Wants," the title cut (No. 1 for a chart-record 14 weeks) and "Don't Turn Around."

In 2002-03, Avril Lavigne repeated the feat with a trio of tracks from her debut release "Let Go": "Complicated" (eight weeks), "Sk8er Boi" (one week) and "I'm With You" (four weeks).

On the Billboard Hot 100, "Just Dance" spent three weeks at No. 1, and "Poker Face" led for one frame. As of last week, "LoveGame" was bulleted at No. 5 on the Hot 100, its highest ranking to date.

Brooke Hogan - The Redemption

Is this not thee worst album cover ever - wow. It's shocking because the single covers for "Falling" and "Hey Yo" are really cute. They also mesh well together and this just...doesn't, wow.

Anyways Brooke's album is out on July21st and from what I have heard it sounds much better than her "Undiscovered" effort. The songs still are a bit copied and such, but it is so much more enjoyable.

VIBE Magazine Folds

Quincy Jones Mag, Vibe, is folding after 16 years. This is no surprise to me, Vibe became extremely stale IMO. I used to be a subscriber, but somewhere along the way, it lost focus and clarity. The best section of Vibe was the last page entitled 20 Questions. The interviews were soft and poor. The writers always seemed to miss the boat. Michael Jackson's concerts were set to begin July 13, 2009n and they didn't think to put him on the cover. It could have been a comeback article and he didn't even need to contribute ala Britney Spears in Allure September 2007. On the flip side, I will give Vibe props for being so broad in their musical tastes and reviews. They seemed to be pretty equal compared to most other Hip Hop/R&B mags. Lastly, some of the Vibe magazine covers were the worst I have ever seen. Here are my pics for worst Vibe covers...

oh my god - that face, why! 50 doesnt look tough, he looks constipated.

worst position ever. what was she thinking.

this must have been a last ditch effort to get readers, but what a mess!

---------------------------- From editor Danyel Smith:

On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine's sixteenth anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you.

Danyel Smith

& Editor in Chief, VIBE

Staff memo from Vibe Media CEO Steve Aaron:

Dear VIBE Team:

It is with a heavy heart that I share some tough news, VMG is closing down effective today, June 30th.

It's been an 16 incredible years since VIBE's inception. There are very few magazines with the richness of history and breadth of talented visionaries who created the powerful lens in which VIBE viewed and shaped urban music and culture.

Ever since I first set foot in this courageous company, I've regarded myself as incredibly fortunate to be be involved with this remarkable brand and group of individuals whose performance has never been nothing short of outstanding. We finished 2008 in an improved position versus the prior year, and accomplished so much, including:

* Editorial Awards
* Editorial transformation into content dept
* New Ad accounts being broken
* The Most Mag Launch
* Award winning re-design
* Profitable digital operation
* VIBE.com growth and improvements and programs such as Best Rapper Ever, #1 Stan, etc
* Mobile VIBE launch
* Micro-site development Mostmag.com to start off.
* V Sessions
* Improved PR coverage

Unfortunately, over the last several months, a confluence of events has obviously posed VMG to exceedingly serious challenges.

* The collapse of the capital markets has impacted us greatly. Over the past several months, we have actively pursued investment resources while working intensively with our bank to find a solution. But the deal market right now remains very poor and at the end of the day, the lack of investment resources to restructure the huge debt on our small company has made this outcome become a reality.
* The print advertising collapse hit VIBE hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business. It's also unfortunate that in a recession many companies reduce the multi-cultural campaigns. These facts, coupled with the continuing decline of the music industry not to mention the newsstand wholesaler consolidation in early 2009 all negatively impacted our business in a significant way.
* The relentless economic situation has depressed our growth initiatives on the digital front. To be clear, VMG has made significant improvement in this part of our business, but not at the accelerated pace required to offset the devastating effects of the most severe recession in our lifetime and the accompanying print losses.

I want to thank you all for your hard work and commitment, and for all of the adventures along the way. I'll miss this place a lot, but I'll miss you all and the magic you create.

Vibe will be remembered as a shockingly brilliant content company that everyone can be proud of and I look forward with great excitement to all of future endeavors you all pursue.

With great affection and respect –

Steve Aaron

Mariah Carey -Obsessed Video News

Mariah Carey will release her music video for the song "Obsessed" this Wednesday, July 15th during the reality America's Got Talent. Mariah shot two versions of the video, one for the original mix and the other for the official remix featuring Gucci Mane. Both were directed by Brett Ratner. I hope it is equal parts of ridiculous and fun. This single doesn't seem to have lifted off the way Mariah's singles usually do. I wouldn't doubt if in a couple weeks another single was released...
